Student Affairs

A Resident Assistant (better known as RA) is hired and trained by Residence Life and works as a peer leader, programmer, policy enforcer, community builder, & advisor to on-campus residents.  RAs are essential to the mission of Residence Life and help build a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment for students here at MSM.

To give you a better idea of the position, below are some of the major areas an RA is responsible for:

Programming

Work with the RA team to create fun and exciting events and programs that positively contribute to our residents’ overall experience at MSM.

Community Development

Create a welcoming community by building individual relationships with residents, creating fun and attractive floor themes and individualized door decorations for each resident, planning and facilitating floor events and gatherings, and serving as a visible, approachable, and reliable resource and role model.

Training & Team Building

Attend and actively participate in all scheduled training sessions, weekly staff meetings and one-on-one meetings.

Peer Mentorship

Serve as a support to students dealing with academic, social, and personal issues. Connect students with other school resources when appropriate.

Supporting Residence Life

Assist with new student move-in and other MSM events such as building closings, student leader recruitment, and room selection.  Conduct health & safety inspections on a semester basis, floor meetings, and any other duties as assigned

Duty

Work assigned office hours, serve on-call to residents on a selected rotation, confront and document individuals violating MSM policies, and respond to all campus emergencies.

Fall: Mid August, 2022
Winter: right after the New Year

The Summer English Study Resident Ambassador (SES RA) is a unique and rewarding role that we offer during the summer. SES RAs serve as the liaison between SES Staff and students. The RA assumes primary responsibility for introducing the students to the states, shaping an environment that supports academic and personal development, and for overseeing the well-being of these students during what can be a very challenging time. SES RAs are required to build individual personal relationships with their residents as well as work as a team to build community among the cohort and facilitate events and programs. SES RAs are required to attend a weekly staff meeting, the weekly programming night on Wednesday nights and host two Saturday outings. All SES RA’s will receive a single room in Andersen Hall. As front line representatives of MSM, RAs are committed to excellence. Dates of employment will run from early June to mid August.

The Orientation Assistant is supervised by and will work closely with the Director of Student Engagement in completing all aspects of the planning, promotion, and implementation of Orientation. The hours of this position are Monday-Thursday, 10am to 4pm from June 1, 2022 through early September.  Hours during the weeks of Orientation will vary and the OA works evenings and weekends as needed to ensure that tasks are complete. This person must be incredibly organized, personable, detail oriented, positive, and energetic. This person must be very comfortable working on a team, taking direction, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ideal candidate is someone who loves to organize events, has a bright & positive outlook, and is excited about welcoming the next incoming class of MSM students! The assistant OA is compensated $4,500 and free housing for the summer. International students interested in this position must have a US social security number prior to the start date of the position.

 

Orientation leaders work from mid-August, through early September 2022. Orientation Leaders assist with prep work leading up to move-in and check-in day on the first day of Orientation.  They are responsible for helping students move in to Andersen Hall, leading new and returning students on outings around the city, answering questions and helping students acclimate and feel welcome.  This is a great position for people who are interested in meeting new students and who want to help make a great first impression of MSM and NYC. This position involves working nights and weekends as the Orientation calendar dictates. OLs are compensated with a stipend of $750, some meals during training and Orientation week, tickets to Orientation events and metro cards for traveling. International students interested in this position must have a US social security number prior to the start of the position.

 

The Peer Advisor program is designed to help incoming international students become acquainted with the resources and services MSM has to offer, and familiarize them with New York City before they arrive at MSM. Peer Advisors assist international students during this transition period by providing insight, sharing experiences, and responding to questions and concerns via e-mail. Peer Advisors are matched with a group of incoming international students starting in April and have the opportunity to correspond and interact virtually with each student throughout the spring and summer months.

Program Details:

Peer Advisors have a mandatory 3 hour evening training session during the week of April 25, 2022 and work from May 2, 2022 thru Orientation. This position is a remote position, in which all work will be completed on the student’s personal computer. This position is an unpaid, volunteer position.

Responsibilities:

• Attend a 3 hour mandatory evening training session during the week of April 25^th
• Create and send 10 emails following the timeline and information given to you by Student Engagement
• Continue to be available for questions via email throughout the summer
• Track who has responded to your emails through our tracking document

 

Summer Conference Assistants (CAs) assist the Residence Life staff in all aspects of managing Andersen Hall over the summer.

The main function of the role involves preparing the building for conferences that stay on campus during the summer and
managing conference groups as they check in and out. This work involves preparing keys & access cards, rooms, organizing linen, hanging signs, welcoming groups and serving as a resource to them during their stay.

CAs typically work twice a week for 3-4 hours and at night when they are on duty.  When on duty, CAs work office hours and sort the mail for summer residents, respond to lockouts, and assist guests as needed. Duty responsibilities include serving as the emergency staff person to help with any guest or emergency need for a 24 hour time frame.

Applicants must be available the entire summer beginning Saturday, May 21 — August 14. (Dates Subject to Change)

CA’s are compensated with free housing for the summer in a single room.
